Sara Soukal & Luka Piletic

Artist statement

We are a theatrical duo, one is a theater clown and the other is a theater improviser. Sara and Luka met while working together on several bigger projects, such as a street theater show Impo quiz and a contemporary dance project Carry on.. We were curious about liked each other so they formed a duet in 2020 to find out how they could create together and if it would be fun.

Sara is one of the most experienced Slovenian theatrical improvisers and Luka is a Gaulier-trained actor and clown.

We make bold and sensitive new work about the impossibility and inevitability of human relations. It is other human beings that save and doom us, and we save and doom others. Our work reflects that. We strongly believe that all aspects of life have equal right to exist: We prefer to focus on everyday and banal, rather than big narratives. We prefer small poems to big stories.

Main motivations when creating:

Luka as an artist is interested in hybrid genres and especially the relationship between the performer and the audience. For his development as an artist he says one of the biggest influences is the pedagogy of Phillipe Gaulier and the principles of Jaques Lecoq. He is interested in the street theater form, where as an actor the focus of the audience is not given lightly. An actor or an actress is always in danger that the audience will get tired of him/ her and leave, and that tension demands a lot of adjustment and sensibility. His main point of interest is the relationship between the audience and the performer.

Sara as an artist is interested in establishing theatrical improvisation as an art form that is equal to other known theatrical, performaive, genres. She is interested in the search of the boundary between the personal and the public, dramatic and private. Lately she’s been asking herself “What is space?”: personal, performative, between the actors and spectators, the stage, the world. What to the distances represent in this space and what relationships are formed due to those distances and what are communicating by being close or apart.
