Artist statement

Musician-composer, builder of sound spaces with a university background as a geographer, Jérôme Hoffmann, after more than fifteen years of practice, tourings, experimentations and researches, created the company Braquage Sonore & Cie in 2018, within which he conducts creative work that places listening at the heart of the artistic process and featuring “sound” as a propellant of daydreaming and storytelling. In situ creations, at the crossroads of visual arts and digital arts, to observe, diagnose and sublimate our relationships to daily spaces and our spaces of escape.

From autonomous installation to performed performances, where the spatialization of sounds and the manipulation of objects is at the heart of the creative process. Ranging from a very short format for a sensory experience, to a concert, passing through a moment of pure eventful relaxation during a sound siesta, Jérôme Hoffmann tries to reveal the identity and sound potential of a space , in a real, symbolic or poetic way.

The company also develops territorial projects around the question of the perception of spaces. Games between our mental representations confronted with the sound realities of places and creations from sound materials captured in situ.

TERRITORY PROJECT « À L’ÉCOUTE DE … » 2021/22
Our project is based on a method that allows us to desacralize the artistic act by putting into dialogue – in the guise of collaborative research – the perceptions of those who discover and those who live a space on a daily basis. A space where the distance between the chair and the stage is neither physical nor symbolic and where the audience has the most experienced voice in terms of experience in situ, of competence in use. A project whose intention is that the proposed experience should have an impact on the participants’ perceptions. During the creation process and afterwards.
A creation about our relationship to listening and our interaction with our everyday sound environments.

Project supported by the DRAC Occitanie within the framework of the aid to the musical project, the Occitanie region, the Théâtre Molière Sète – Scène national Archipel de Thau, The Atelline place of activation Art and Public Space, the cities of Frontignan and Balaruc-le-Vieux.

EFFET DOPPLER DES PAYSAGES AUBRAC REGIONAL NATURE PARK 2020/21
The starting point is the sound landscapes of the Aubrac, the experiences felt in these landscapes, the vibration that is imprinted on the retina when we close our eyes and imagine it again, in order to propose a creation that addresses the different approaches to “crossing” these spaces. An immersion in the territory between June 2020 and 2021 for a creation around the landscapes of Aubrac, whose creations can still be heard on the paths and in the printed publication. A work of collecting sounds, images and testimonies to create a protean work that testifies to and poeticizes the relationship of men to their territory, its nature and its power of escape. An action of collection from the inhabitants and the people who cross it while itinerating on the footpaths (visitors’ book on the footpaths, questionnaires in the tourist offices, educational actions and meetings in the schools,…).

Project carried out within the framework of the Massif Central inter-park (IPAMAC), Aubrac Regional Nature Park, with the financial support of the State and the Scènes Croisées de Lozère (Scène conventionnée d’intérêt national “art en territoire »).

MAR I MUNT 2021
A journey composed from sound recordings made in the natural environment of the Roussillon region, from the summits of the Canigou to the shores of the Mediterranean, from instruments played and an intriguing sound creation produced live by the manipulation of blocks of ice and a granite rock in front of different microphones.
A real tribute to nature, that of Roussillon and more broadly to all the natures we have all crossed, to their elements but also to their fragility.
An ode that lets our personal memories of nature come back to us and that questions our relationship with it.

Creation on Nov 14, 2021, Festival Aujourd’hui Musiques, Théâtre de l’Archipel Scène nationale de Perpignan.

SUB AQUA 2019
A cinematic sound nap on the risk of flooding of the Rhône and Saône rivers based on in situ recordings of hydraulic structures such as locks and electric turbines in the Rhône, and waterfall dams in Roussillon.
Creation 2019 for the contemporary exhibition “Big Torrent” by Bipolar. 59 performances since July 2019. Diffusion at the 73rd Avignon festival 2019 and at Chalon dans la rue 2019.

Project co-financed by the European Union and the DREAL AURA (winner of the 2018-2019 call for projects of the Rhône Plan), with the support of the CNC-DICRéAM, the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, within the framework of the STARTS initiative (Science, Technology & Art).
