Artist statement

Duality, one’s placed in the world, the singularity of being, one’s relationship to the past and to the present, and one’s own perception of one’s self are the thorough that I have ploughed and have been working on during my 15 years as a director and on stage itself, because the same is true, I believe, as my work as an actor and of the research I have undertaken with those I have encountered in the course of my teaching activities : to be onseself, to be an immanence and permanence, to recover oneself and, with the help of a few tools, to build further. My career is that of a contemporary theater performing artist ; my training is classical.

I am of this generation also caught between two fires. I cannot turn my back on the text before me, but in my artistic language it constitutes one element among others, as it has done for a whole generation, if not two, before mine. Our theatre is not documentary, but it emerges from a part of a social reality ; the question is how to grasp this and free ourselves from it to create an artistic and poetic, if controversial, project. My artistic work is based on how our bodies relate to others and to space, how this connexion becomes a relationship, and how the unique truth of this relationship reveals its reality. It is for me to expose the disorder in the regulated order, reveal the faultline, not as the grain of sand in the machine, but, by holding the whole machinery up to the light, to re-articulate it in such a way that the ever-perspicacious viewer perceive how it works.

As a creative artist, my personal rapport with reality is not set in stone – it is a worked-on perception. And this reality, thus re-worked, becomes embodied in a fiction of existence. This is where I stand as this stage of my journey. And just as I distinguish myself from my character when I take on a part, my real « role » is to put this particular voice of mine accross (with or without words) to other people who are themselves steeped in their own. In the political act of representing, I create a symbiosis of intimate life, imagined life and aesthetic and political markers in pursuit of identity and questioning, based on texts, places of writing and periods of time as they reflect on one another. Mainly, I conduct ongoing research on the social and mental structuring of society and on how to stage it, should it be while conducting it with everyday people or professional actors, in a theatrical narrative open to a heterogeneous audience drawing from this narrative according to their own system of references.
