M.A.Alicia Ocadiz (Mexico City 1988-)
I dance because it enables me to tell stories language fails to tell, because through dance I embody my perception of reality in ways inaccessible to language. I use dance to explore feelings and emotions that arise in movement and attempt to create embodied stories that the public can relate to without much verbal explanation.
My creative processes seek to use the human body as a discursive tool: a flexible and moldable material to tell stories. I am especially interested in the body as a landscape, as a space of resistance and as a means of non-verbal, kinetic communication.
I hold a master’s degree in Dance and Movement arts from the Universitat Catolica de San Antonio de Murcia in Spain and a bachelor’s degree from Rotterdam Dance Academy (CODARTS) and the Escuela Nacional de Danza Clasica y Contemporanea in Mexico City. Among others, I studied at the Beijing International Arts School in Beijing, China. In my career, I have performed as a dancer, choreographer and circus artist on various stages, theaters and festivals in countries such as Mexico, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Slovenia, China, Panama, Costa Rica, Indonesia and Spain. I have been a member of the independent dance groups 2Move Dance Company (Netherlands), Les Yeux Roulant (France), Foco al Aire Producciones (Mexico), Ashley Meeder Movement Project (USA), Circus Kansky (Slovenia). In 2009 I received the Mexico City Young Artists Award, and in 2010 the Niewe Maan Award in Rotterdam.
Since 2018 I am based in Slovenia, in 2019 I choreographed and danced my solo debut Sestavi se in the production of the Ljubljana Dance Theater. In 2020 I co-directed the piece “Where is the golden egg?” with Raúl Taméz my second production with Plesni Teater Ljubljana.I am also a regular guest of the Ana Desetnica and Rdeči Revirji festivals, as well as a teacher at various dance workshops of the Summer and Winter Dance School (JSKD) and the Practicum of Contemporary Dance Art (SVŠGL).
